The IIHS gives the Highlander its Top Safety Pick+ award, with top 'Good'? ratings in every crash test, while its headlights are only 'Good'? on the top Platinum model, and 'Acceptable'? on others. The NHTSA gives it five stars overall, with four stars for frontal crash protection.

Every Highlander comes with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control. All but the base model have blind-spot monitors and many have an optional surround-view camera system and parking sensors, helpful because the rearward vision is obstructed by thick roof pillars.
