2022 Toyota Highlander
The Toyota Highlander is a three-row crossover SUV with edgy styling and confident road manners. It's big, at 194.4 inches on a 112.2-inch wheelbase. Its available hybrid powertrain brings 36 mpg, a remarkable number for an eight-seat vehicle. Its handling is poised, and it scores high in safety, so it's got what it takes for families: space, safety and economy. It hasn't changed for 2022, other than the addition of a bronze trim package. The standard engine is a healthy 295-horsepower V-6 with an 8-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The Hybrid uses a 243-hp, 2.5-liter inline-4 and electric motor with a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack; its all-wheel drive is powered by the electric motor at the rear wheels.
With front-wheel drive, that engine is EPA rated at 21/29/24 mpg, which drops by 1 mpg with all-wheel drive. The Hybrid leaps up to 36/35/36 mpg with FWD, and 35/35/35 mpg with AWD.
The IIHS gives the Highlander its Top Safety Pick+ award, with top 'Good'? ratings in every crash test, while its headlights are only 'Good'? on the top Platinum model, and 'Acceptable'? on others. The NHTSA gives it five stars overall, with four stars for frontal crash protection.
Every Highlander comes with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control. All but the base model have blind-spot monitors and many have an optional surround-view camera system and parking sensors, helpful because the rearward vision is obstructed by thick roof pillars.
